The Truth

Remember when I talked about my uncle and aunt splitting up? Well, it's been a year since they called it quits, yet since that time they have carried on as if nothing had changed. The reason: they didn't want to upset their child's first year of high school. I disagreed from the get-go. I thought, what better way to rob a person of any feeling that they might have some say, might have something to contribute to the situation then not telling them until after the fact. Their offspring are both old enough and smart enough to understand what was going on, but they were deliberately left out. I remember sitting at the table listening to my aunt lie about what would be happening in the summer. Surely a family shouldn't operate that way.
Today they finally learned the truth and the cousin I am closest to, well, the first words out of her mouth was "I can't believe everyone else knew but us."
I'm so sorry, my cousins.

I hate family secrets. We had many of those growing up and I refuse to have my kids grow up that way. Your poor cousins. I hope they cope ok.
